About SSE

Background

The School of Science and Engineering (SSE), previously named School of Engineering & Computer Science (SECS), traces its root back to 1993 when Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) was founded and its outer campus in Chittagong was emerged. Later in 2013, Chittagong Independent University (CIU) was established and the j ourney of SSE took off with new goals. Today this school continues to be one of the major schools of CIU aiming to produce world class engineering graduates.

In addition to offering B.Sc. in Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE) & Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering (ETE), SSE has added one Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) program in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Considering only permanent faculties currently the school’s teacher student ratio is 1:14. Adjunct faculties from Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) and Chittagong University (CU) have made the school vibrant and diversified. In order to meet the quality and competency of our students we regularly arrange seminars and workshops, a week or month long training programs (such as Android Apps Development, Robotics, Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Industrial Automation, Advanced Programming etc.) through our clubs. Moreover, arranging programs like National High School Programming Contest (NHSPC) 2015 and also Inter School & Colleges Programming Contest, Workshop on Programming for High School and College teachers etc, we have shown our commitment towards local society too. Ongoing monthly seminars from faculties have inspired the academics and students.

Mission:

SSE will support the development of our country by discovering and advancing knowledge through scholarship, dissemination of knowledge through teaching and outreach, creative experimentation of ideas and concepts of technology needs. Excellence and diversity in research are essential to our mission built on our strong collaboration with industry and government research laboratories. SSE foster, create and develop capacity amongst students to become future leaders in academia, government, industries and entrepreneurial pursuit through a rigorous curriculum of theory and application that develops the ability to solve problems individuality and in teams.

Vision:

We envisioned CIU to be known as the number one destination in the country for science and engineering education. At SSE we facilitate our students with contemporary and rigorous educational experiences containing modern curriculum, up-to-date lab and field work. We focus to provide an atmosphere that facilitates personal commitment to the educational success of students in an environment that values diversity and community by promoting education and research partnerships with different universities and industries. We have designed undergraduate programs that integrate global awareness, communication skills and team building across the curriculum. Introducing Post Graduate program in different disciplines departments would be one of our next central activities within shortest possible time focusing internationally recognized research programs Graduate education and training that prepares students for interdisciplinary engineering research and advanced problem solving. We target to build leadership and service to meet society’s needs.

Objectives:

The objectives of SSE are to disseminate, create and advance knowledge wisdom and understanding and to offer education of the high standard by teaching, research, training and extension program. Our effort is to give effect to the spirit of national and international good will, friendship and partnership, as well as the desire of our people for the overall benefits off society and sustainability of engineering technology know how. Furthermore, our objectives include-

Develop interdisciplinary, problem-based academic program aligned with engineering and technical education.
Integrate IT based resources from around the world.
Create applied, evidence-given research activities on problem solving of national and international forum.

Activities

SSE students are associated with several clubs (e.g. iSEC, Robotics Club) of CIU for their extracurricular activities. The club which is mostly linked with SSE activities is Independent Science & Engineering Club (iSEC). The SSE activities are divided into following sectors which are important for a student to enhance his/her knowledge to meet the demand of modern technological world.

Message from the Dean

Engineering is the bridge between the sciences and humanities. Engineers apply scientific principles to advance the human condition. Their success relies as much upon an understanding of physics and math as an appreciation of history and psychology.

Unfortunately through the last decade we have seen number of engineering students declined in our country and the trend is similar worldwide. It is going to take a great deal of effort to change the trend. But Engineering is the quintessential liberal education for the technologically driven world in which we live. So as a nation we must pursue the goal of excelling in the domain of science and engineering to achieve better position in world order.

School Of Science and Engineering (SSE) of Chittagong Independent University (CIU) aim to be the number one destination for engineering students within the country. So we have designed our lab facilities by following modern design principles, our faculties are well trained in their respective field and more over we teach students the most up to date syllabus in the field of engineering. As we grow and advance the School of Engineering and Computer Science, we have no more important mission than to lead by example in the country, developing and showcasing engineering innovation and creation.

I earned a Bachelor's degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Chittagong Independent University. While I was studying at CIU, the atmosphere there was very supportive and encouraged my growth both academically as well as personally which greatly impacted me. Currently, I am a Fellow at Teach for Bangladesh, where my technical skills are used to motivate and help young people, encouraging them to bring positive changes in society.

In the year 2018-2023, my journey as a student of computer science and engineering at Chittagong Independent University was characterized by learning, significant growth, and accomplishments. The rigorous curriculum and supportive faculty fostered my growth and shaped me into a skilled and confident engineer to tackle real-world challenges. With a solid foundation in computer science and engineering, I decided to pursue my master’s degree in information technology at Griffith University in Australia. The foundational knowledge and problem-solving skills made my master’s life not only feasible but thriving. I will always be grateful to my respectful teachers and parents for making me who I am today.

Hey there, this is Saroar Jahan Shuba, thrilled to be a graduate of CIU Engineering School, holding a degree in Computer Science & Engineering. Throughout my undergraduate journey, I experienced a blend of hands-on learning and rigorous theoretical foundation, preparing me excellently for my next chapter in Management Information Systems at Lamar University, Texas, USA. CIU's curriculum adheres closely to international standards, facilitating a smooth transition to graduate school. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to CIU for providing an exceptional undergraduate experience!

My journey at CIU was enriched by a merit scholarship that I received till my last semester, constantly fueling my interest in academics. I have been awarded the fully funded TGGS-DAAD Scholarship, funded by DAAD, to study for an MSc in Electrical Engineering at the Sirindhorn International Thai-German Graduate School of Engineering, collaboration between King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok and RWTH Aachen University, Germany. The consistent support from our professors motivated me to engage in research in communication. This experience has made me a more confident person. I am proud to be a graduate of the School of Science and Engineering at Chittagong Independent University.

I humbly remember the contributions of my respected Faculty Members of the School and the University in shaping and inspiring me to nurture the light of knowledge, to create the patriotic sense to serve the nation and to cherish love for this prestigious institution. The "State of The Art" facilities of both classrooms and laboratories of SSE help the students to be enthusiast to search for knowledge and skill. I cannot but signify the course of LFE (LIVE IN FIELD EXPERIENCE) provided by CIU that teaches us how to accommodate and adapt in every social and professional situation. I wish all the success for my University.

My undergrad journey was packed with hands-on learning and solid theoretical grounding, setting me up nicely for my next adventure in Engineering Management at Hofstra University, New York, USA. What's remarkable is how CIU's engineering undergrad curriculum perfectly aligned with international standards, making my transition to grad school seamless. Huge shoutout to CIU for an undergrad experience that's truly top-notch!

Competitive programming is essential for a software engineer. The faculty of the School of Science & Engineering has always motivated and supported us on this topic. They have encouraged us to participate in projects and competitions other than those in our courses, which helped us strengthen our resumes I am truly grateful for all the love and support that I have received from CIU.

I am a former student of the School of Science and Engineering. I recently received my degree in computer science and engineering from the School of Science & Engineering. My thesis topic was "Performance evaluation of novel SLAM algorithms using Turtlebot 3," supervised by Dr. Aseef Iqbal. I was accepted into the University of Missouri-Kansas City's master's program in computer science and was given the Dean's International Scholarship Award (DISA), which is worth $8000 annually.

I'm currently pursuing my Master's in Computer Science at Acadia University, Canada. The journey has been rewarding, marked by the honor of receiving both an Acadia Graduate Scholarship (AGS) and an Acadia Graduate Teaching Assistantship (AGTA). These opportunities have not only supported my academic endeavors but also enriched my overall experience. After commencing my classes, I secured funding and took on the role of a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA). Moreover, I'm actively engaged with the Acadia Computer Science Society and the Acadia Institute of Data Analytics, participating in various projects. These involvements have provided me with a variety of project opportunities, broadening my practical experience and networking opportunities. Additionally, I'm working with the Enactus Acadia Club, focusing on connecting students with business leaders through entrepreneurial-based initiatives.

The Chittagong Independent University School of Science and Engineering (SSE) regularly organizes a wide range of academic, technological, cultural, and career-focused events to enhance students’ knowledge, creativity, and professional skills.
